What is tooling development?

Tooling development is the process of creating a mold that will be used to create the shape of your product or part.

At Contour Engineering we are equipped with everything necessary to create your component or product with precision. Our facility features:

  • 3D printing sizes up to 14” x 14” x 12”
  • 3D scanning
  • Design and CAD/CAM software including Solidworks, Mastercam, and Unigraphics
  • Aluminum cast tools sizes up to 1600-lb cast weight
  • Soft tools and patterns using wood and REN board material
  • 3D machining sizes up to 84″ x 144″
  • 3D modeling

The process of building molds

  • Receive your 3D design file
  • Design a mold with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Fabricate a foundry pattern
  • Inspect the pattern or patterns
  • Create male and female castings machined to adhere the castings to the mold plates
  • Provide locations for fill guns, ejectors, and support posts for the casting sets
  • Mount the cavities to the mold plates
  • Inspect mold for proper alignment
